Transforming Agroecology Through Green Biorefineries

Accelerating circular value chains, sustainable business models, and resilient farming systems across Europe.

GBR-ACT Project

Green Biorefineries as Catalysts for Agroecological Transitions and Circular Value Chains

GBR-ACT brings together a European consortium across six countries — Sweden, France, Germany, Finland, Denmark and Lithuania — to position Green Biorefineries as catalysts for the agroecological transition.

Over 36 months, the consortium will develop circular value chains, sustainable business models, deployment strategies, and policy recommendations for grass-based biorefineries that turn permanent grasslands into protein, bioenergy, biofertilizers, and biomaterials.

Why it matters

Why Green Biorefineries matter

Permanent grasslands cover a third of EU agricultural land. They store carbon, host biodiversity, and feed livestock — but their potential as feedstock for high-value protein, bioenergy and biomaterials is largely untapped.

  • Local protein autonomy, reducing imported soy dependency
  • Carbon-smart land use anchored by permanent grasslands
  • Decentralized rural processing, creating skilled jobs
  • Fully circular cascading use of every biomass fraction
